²N_s, N_i are independent within a single grain, but of course not between different grains of the same sample, as the spontaneous and induced track counts both depend on the U-concentration, which tends to vary significantly from grain to grain (McGee and Johnson 1979, Johnson et al. 1979, Green 1981b, Galbraith 1981, Carter 1990)
